This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students ask a million questions a day! They are eager to learn and excited when they have a chance to explore new concepts. My class consists of twelve 3 to 5 year olds with various disabilities and learning styles. For many of my students this is their first time in a public school setting. I try to make my room the most exciting and interactive place for them to be in for 7 hours a day.
My classroom is full of bright, young learners who will one day be our future leaders!
Our school is a Title One school , which means over 80% of my students come from low income, marginalized families. So most of my students are coming from homes where access to additional educational materials is limited.
My Project
My students are learning to associate symbols (letters/numbers) to spoken language, print awareness, (how to hold a book, front/back of the book, read from left to right, top to bottom, word spacing etc).
When my students hear stories read to them they are building listening, memory and vocabulary skills.
These are all essential skills for developing pre-reading skills.
The books and CDs will be used in my reading area, to enhance our listening center. All of the books have been selected with my students in mind. While listening to some of their favorite stories, my students will develop a love for reading. An early love of reading gives students the necessary building blocks for success in reading.
