Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I was younger, I remember how captivated I was listening to the beautiful stories my teacher would read us.

Our students attend a charter school that is part of the KIPP LA network, featured in the new film, "Waiting for Superman." Our students are college-bound and show courage each and every day at school.

Our school is in a high-need area in Southern California, and many of our students are English Language Learners.

My Project

Our students will be able to listen to captivating stories by utilizing the listening library. At this center, students will become immersed in the three little pigs villages, hoping that that next house will not be blown down by the big bad wolf. Or, students might go on a walk, predicting what animal will pop up next. Perhaps they will imagine themselves as a frog, hoping from pad to pad. Throughout these voyages, they will be inspired by the author reading fluently to them to take a risk and read just like them.

With these listening library books, soon enough our students will become fluent readers.

They will read stories with momentary pauses to evoke suspense or heightened alarm. They might even shout with exuberance as the main character finally overcomes her challenge. Practicing this important reading skill will help them become the best readers they can be as they climb the mountain to and through college.
