I want reading to come alive for my kindergarten students who are developing the skills they need to be successful, fluent readers!
I am a first year kindergarten teacher and I have very limited resources to begin my year. I have seen the effectiveness of allowing students to listen and follow along with a story before they are actually able to read themselves. As a kindergarten teacher, my goal is for each of my students to be able to read when they leave my classroom. I do not want the students in my classroom to miss out on anything that might enhance their ability to read simply because of the lack of resources. Many of my students are from low income homes and do not have access to resources to aid their reading at home. Therefore, it is up to me to make sure they are given every avenue possible to be successful.
I want my classroom to be the best possible learning experience for each student and with all the different individual needs children have, I believe having this listening station will help achieve my goal of teaching students to read. How great would it be to know your child was reading fluently after their first year of school! My students will benefit from this listening station tremendously due to the simple fact that it will hold their attention longer. I plan to have students rotate to different literacy centers during our reading block, but for Kindergarteners , it is difficult for them to improve their reading independently. If one group is working with me on reading while another is listening to a story and how the words sound, they have an example of fluent reading without me having to be in two places at once (as much as we wish we could). This listening station would be used daily in my classroom and would be a major asset to my teaching style and strategies.
You will make it possible for my students to have a story come alive while learning to enjoy reading. It is a constant struggle to engage students, but if they start enjoying reading early, it will only develop from there.
