This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Primary students grow from hearing, doing and practicing...a complete listening station will allow my students to actively interact with reading as they become fluent readers.
My students are aged 5-7 and come from the south side of Chicago.
While we do as much as we can in the classroom, there is still much room for growth. My school is located in the heart of the city and our students come from a range of different circumstances. They are eager to learn and come to school ready for new knowledge daily.
My Project
Currently my students have a 30 minute literacy center rotation. We use computers, our classroom Promethean board, paperback books and games to become better readers and writers. I have a listening station set up but we have very few books with audio. I believe that many of my students can learn from hearing stories and because of the classroom size, it's near impossible for each student to receive a personal one on one session with a teacher each day. These books will help to close the gap on those students who need extra support in reading.
As we know, reading is the foundation of all learning.
My class is split with kindergarten and first graders. It is the most crucial point in their lives to begin reading AND to develop a love for reading. I can't think of a better way to do this than to provide fun and engaging activities for them to use. This platform will increase reading for them for years to come and will help guide our students in other academic areas as well!
