Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are my whole world. They amaze me each and every day. No matter our day, they are happy! We are a small, tight-knit school with a strong sense of community. Our school is family in every sense of the word. Many of our students' parents have moved here from
deprived countries in hopes of a better life for their children.
They value education and support their teachers to the best of their abilities. Many of my students are learning to speak English, as well as read and write English. They are my translators when I am meeting with their parents to inform them of school events. This is why they inspire me to work harder. They never quit, never give up, and always persevere.
My students make me want to be a better person, to appreciate the small things in life. They take a bus ride to school each day, arrive to school with a smile and a hug. Even though they had to arise early, walk to a bus stop, and skip breakfast most days ... they are happy to see me. They deserve a good start to an even better education.
My Project
My students are learning about literacy every day. They love story time and small group reading time. They love buddy reading and using their book boxes to explore new worlds.
Their favorite time of the day is when they get to listen to a book on CD!
My classroom had several literacy stations in it and the kiddos all want to visit the listening center. My books on CD are very limited and most only have one book. Typically 4 students are sharing one book while they listen to the story.
Having more audio books will introduce the students to literacy. Hearing the narrator change his/her voice, following along with the dialogue, using picture cues etc..are all reading strategies that young readers will utilize at the listening center. They will be more enthused about learning to read as they explore new topics and stories!
