When I began teaching 5 years ago, I had a class of 25 vibrant sixth graders who were eager to learn. They had the drive and the desire to succeed but I noticed that their reading ability and comprehension skills were that of a second or third grader. This made learning very difficult and frustrating for many of them. I could not understand how a student could make it so far in their education reading on such a low level. Now that I am teaching third grade, I am seeing the same problem among my third graders. They are eager to learn but their reading ability holds them back. Many of my third graders are reading on a first or second grade level which is unacceptable. Now that I will be moving on to fifth grade I am sure reading will also be a hurdle for my students. I firmly believe that the more kids are exposed to seeing words, hearing literature, and practice using it, the more their reading will improve. Currently, all the students in our school have a block of time for independent reading but many of them are not reading due to the difficult nature of the words. I would like them to have access to a Listening Center so that they can have access to all types of literature and not be limited because the text is too difficult. Normally, Listening Centers are reserved for early childhood but older children can benefit from them also. Many of my students are not being read to at home and I would like for them to be able to listen to various types of books so that they can continue to grow as readers. Not only will the listening center develop their reading skills but it will also be a great resource to prepare the students for the listening component of the State Reading Exam. The exam requires students to listen to a specific text read aloud, take notes and answer questions about what they heard. Once my students feel confident as readers, the doors of learning will open even wider for them to step through.
