Our students reside in a low socio-economic, urban school district. Eighty-two percent of them are economically disadvantaged, and seventy-four percent of them are considered at-risk.
I have worked diligently to provide my students a curriculum that satisfies a variety of learning styles, including auditory.
This allows my students to remain engaged in lessons, which is extremely successful in this demographic of student.
Furthermore, I have many students who receive modifications for testing, which includes oral delivery of text if they need it. They work very hard during our units of study and are very prepared for their unit tests and daily work.
My Project
Studies show that when the material is presented in a variety of formats, such as visual, kinesthetic and auditory, student engagement and achievement improves. This is especially true for the at-risk student who is easily distracted. And in this population of student, most contain academic modifications that involve oral administration of tests.
Our students have been able to experience an auditory format to be introduced to new science material and reinforce science literacy and vocabulary.
As a result of implementing a variety of learning styles, I have seen great improvement in their retention. However, there is a limit to the auditory work we can do.
Our school does not have the funds to provide good headphones for every student. I only have 2 in my class right now, and they barely work. Funding this project for headphones would allow all my students to be engaged in auditory work without waiting to share the 2 headphones we have. It will also allow them to focus on their work in a quiet environment without being disturbed and disturbing others during tests and daily activities.
