This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are curious and energetic boys and girls who need extra support to achieve academic goals in both reading and math. They are students in grades Kindergarten through 1, on various levels of mastery so we work in small groups to meet individual needs.
Growing up in the inner-city poses numerous challenges for them, but they are smart children!
Having the supplies to help them learn in a fun and interactive way helps to close the achievement gap that many of the students face.
My Project
When students are young, they learn to listen for the sounds in words. This is called phonemic awareness. As they develop this skill, they begin to notice that some words have the same or different sounds in the beginning, middle, and/or end of a word. They develop their understanding of rhyming words and letter sounds. This skill then builds into their ability to sound out words for reading and eventually spelling.
The activities and materials requested in this project; learning puzzles, sorting houses, and phonemic awards boxes, will provide the students with engaging and fun ways to develop these important skills.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
