Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My learners have a large variety of interests. Not one is the same. They love learning about many topics and reading different genres of books but sometimes it's hard to explore new interests without a way to research and sometimes reading abilities get in the way. With these items, they will be able to explore new topics as well as practice their researching skills on different activities by accessing many different resources. With the fourth grade switching for subjects this year, this project will be able to reach double the amount of learning!
My Project
These items will improve my students vocabularies and reading abilities. Too many times readers are not exposed to classics and other popular books due to their personal reading abilities. Students tend to choose books that they know they can read and certain books are too thick or a bit intimidating for them to read on their own. I recently purchased a listening center with my own money to help with this issue but was unable to buy more than one book and cd set.
There are many studies that prove that listening to higher level books/stories can improve a student's reading abilities because they are reading along with the story and listening to fluent reading.
These book and audio sets are books that are popular among the students interests but get passed over by many. The items will be paired with a listening center so that they have all the chances possible to read interesting and classics stories while also learning and being exposed to new words that they may not hear anywhere else. Titles such as "Little House on the Prairie" and "Where the Red Fern Grows" are classics full of important vocabulary but are often over-looked by struggling readers.
Students will read along with the stories being read by using the matching books that come with the audio cd's. These items come with the audio part to help students to be exposed to a variety of choices and listen to words that they might not be able to read on their own.
