I am a first grade New York City Teaching Fellow teaching special education at a high needs school in the Bronx. I feel that my students would benefit greatly from listening to everything from classical music to books on tape. I also know that extensive research has been done on the effectiveness of playing classical music in the background to create a calming atmosphere. Therefore, I am hoping to obtain a CD/tape player for my classroom. I am eagerly awaiting a sound system so that I can begin using it as a learning center and already have numerous books on tape just waiting to be played. My class also loves music and it calms them down after recess, snack and gym. By playing music all day long, as background music on a CD, my class can relax and be more receptive to what I am teaching. The great thing about a CD player with headphones is that its use is not just limited to one project and all of my special students, with all of their differing learning styles and needs, can benefit from it.
