Think back....remember how exciting it was to sit and listen to your teacher read you a story. It is just as exciting for us to hear our students read with that same passion and expression. It is a turning point in a child's educational development when they begin to read fluently.
My class consists of 21 first grade students between the ages of six and seven.
They come from various cultural backgrounds and have varying learning experiences. They have come to realize the importance of reading with expression, and are all anxious to become better, more fluent readers. We are a Title I school, located in an urban area. We are a primary school, serving child development, Kindergarten, and first grade students. One of the big components of our curriculum is building fluency. Our school continues to grow and grow, and there are just not enough resources to accommodate this growth. As a result, not every classroom is equipped with a listening station. Our students will greatly benefit from a listening center to aid them in becoming better readers.
My Project
All children love to hear a good story. They especially love hearing a story read to them by someone who reads with fluidity and expression. A listening center will serve as a great addition to model fluent reading for my students. In addition, listening centers help students focus on the sounds in the words being read to them. The students are exposed to the structure of language and this helps them understand it better. Listening to books on cd will also introduce the students to new vocabulary words. Listening to books on cd in a listening station will help the students build a lifetime love for reading.
With your help, these children will gain a whole new appreciation for fluent reading.
They will be anxious to read along with the narrator, and learning to read will be fun and exciting!
