My Students

My students are from a neighborhood with a high refugee population. As a result, they speak many different languages and have incredibly diverse and unimaginable experiences. Many of them are just learning what it means to be in school and speak the English language. As you can imagine, the interruption of COVID caused even bigger educational and language gaps for them than it did for most Utah students. They are racing to catch up without burning out.

It can be overwhelming and frustrating for my students to go from their home culture to the American elementary school culture and back every day.

Nonetheless, they are driven and committed, even as 6- and 7-year-olds. They work hard, whether their parents are able to support them academically or not. They bring so much inspiration and sunshine into our school!

My Project

A big part of our life in schools after COVID is implementing digital learning.

While not a replacement for person-to-person instruction, digital learning brings some benefits, including automatically individualizing instruction to help tackle those unique reading and language gaps left by COVID.

The problem is that 21 Chromebooks make a lot of noise in a classroom and the headphones we have access to through our district are not made for my young students' small heads.

The headphones I have requested are small-sized, sturdy, and even cap the volume to protect little ears. They will allow each child to engage in their own digital learning every day without being distracted by their neighbors.
