My students need over the ear headphones in order to participate in online standardized tests, as well as quietly utilize reading and math apps on the iPads.
It’s difficult to put into words what I see and experience everyday as the teacher of 21 second graders. 21 unique minds, 21 unique personalities, and 21 unique cultures and backgrounds. Countries of origin may be located in Africa and Central America, as well as many students coming from the United States. Our school is located in the heart of a low income neighborhood. This is reflected in our classroom through the necessity of free and reduced lunches offered to 100% of students at our school. The need is also reflected in the “Snack Packs” sent home every Friday and the healthy snacks given to each student every single day.
My students are 7 to 8 years old, but many have experienced more tragedy, more trauma, than I ever knew existed when I was their age.
Every time they walk through our classroom door, it is my goal, my duty, to ensure each and every one of my students feels safe and loved. If they do not feel that way at home, they need it more than ever at school.
My Project
If you’ve ever tried to listen to a video or an audio book while others are attempting to do the same, you know how difficult it can be to concentrate. Through this project, my students will have the opportunity to put on these headphones and block out the surrounding noise. These headphones will allow several students at a time the ability to listen to books read aloud, take part in online assessments, and engage in math activities that are geared toward individual learning levels.
While the sound is contained within the headphones, those on the other side will be able to continue learning, while the students wearing the headphones can increase their concentration on the task.
