Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want to provide my students with opportunities to solve problems and practice their listening skills. Providing them with headphones to listen, create, and practice their literacy skills will be enriching.

My first grade class is an eclectic group of students nestled in a delightful neighborhood Title I charter school.

Students are eager and ready to learn. They arrive with a zest for knowledge. Students in our class have a broad range of exposure to experiences in school and learning opportunities. While some of the students have attended traditional kindergarten prior to entering first grade, others had a less formal experience. Students come from a broad socioeconomic spectrum, with many students from our school participating in the free or reduced price lunch program. About 20% of my class requires early intervention for either academics or behavior. While we strive every day to provide for our students, Utah spends less per student than any other state. We are so excited that we purchased our school from a local district in recent years!

My Project

Students love using technology and love listening to people and learning things through technology. High quality and durable headphones would be the perfect compliment to our already purchased listening center that has headphones that break regularly. My students need 10 pairs of headphones that will be used in two different listening centers. The listening center will be used throughout the year. Students will rotate through centers, visiting the listening center every day. These headphones will allow students to practice their one-to-one correspondence while listening to their favorite books, following instructions and completing comprehension activities. With the headphones I have selected, students will have the opportunity to listen and follow along to a number of classroom tasks and activities without worrying about the cords breaking, pulling out of the headphone or running the risk of having wires peek out of the cords.

Children take great pleasure in the experience of listening to many stories read by different readers and practicing literacy skills through technology.

While students follow along, the narrator is providing a model for fluent and expressive reading and comprehension expectation. Up to five students will be able to listen at the same time in each listening center. Understanding and using technology will also be encouraged during this center time. "Teachers will not be replaced by technology, but teachers who don't use technology will be replaced by those who do." -Sheryl Beach
