When children come to school and listen to me read books to them, they want to listen to the stories over and over. Listening stations provide this wonderful opportunity for children.
We are known as the Friendly Frogs.
This year my class is filled with little tadpoles that are eager to turn into big frogs. They love to listen to me read. The expression and intonations I use when reading aloud to them makes them so engaged in the story. For them to hear what good reading sounds like is so important for them to turn into good readers themselves.
Most first graders are just emerging as readers. When they hear the fluidity and expression in reading the story comes alive. This motivates them to want to read accurately. If I can provide them with a place to listen to more stories, then I can provide them more opportunities to become better readers.
My Project
By providing my students with a place to listen to stories, I will be able to improve their comprehension, and fluency as readers. Having the wireless headphones will allow me to move my listening center when needed. It will also allow for easy accessibility to the listening center. No cords to worry about tangling and being damaged. Many of the books I have chosen are first grade favorites and very engaging stories. Having a table and chairs gives them a comfortable place to sit. I can even move it outside because I will have wireless headphones. Children would love being able to sit in the warm sun and listen to stories.
My students love books and stories.
They can't wait for teacher story time. If I could have a listening center in my room, then I can provide a time during workshop that they can listen to new stories or old stories whenever they choose. It will provide them with a variety of different voices to listen to. The more opportunities my students have to hearing good readers, the better chances they will have to become avid readers.
