This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a special education teacher, in a special education school in New York, I educate 6 wonderful kindergarten students with moderate to severe intellectual and developmental disabilities who are extremely motivated to learn and expand their academic and life skills. The majority of my students are non-verbal or have limited verbal skills and require alternate means of communication. They also have motor sensory processing deficits making it harder for the brain to receive signals from their bodies.
My goal as an educator is to give my students access to the capabilities they already have within them through education, consistency, and kindness.
In order to reach this goal, they first need to access a sense of calm, and readiness to learn.
My Project
Reading is a foundational skill that opens learning pathways and helps develop the minds of early learners. It plays an especially important role in developing language, and engaging early learners with the world around them.
For students with disabilities, reading along with an audio tape provides dual access to reading content, auditory and visual, which helps them to better understand and engage with what they are reading.
Through this project, I hope to instill a love for reading in my kindergarten students. I also hope they will derive knowledge, language and reading skills from the books donated to our classroom.
