Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I will be teaching in a kindergarten class with 25 students. These children come from low-income families and live in a high-risk community; many of them don't have books at home and their parents speak little or no english. Our school vision is to help our students achieve their American dream by accelerating their academic achievement and becoming proficient readers and writers.
My goal as a teacher is to provide my students with the best learning and nurturing environment and to instill in them the love for reading.
My Project
Having a listening center in my classroom will not only help my students increase their listening comprehension but it will also help them make the important connection that letters and words on a page convey meaning.
In addition, a listening center will provide my students with an extra model of fluent reading during our language arts rotations, when I am working with students in small groups and I cannot personally read for the rest of them.
Finally, books on tape many times are embellished with silly voices and dramatic enhancements which makes the students feel like reading is a fun time rather than just work.
