Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second-grade teacher in California. I have a very fun and active class. Most of the time, my students like to work on the floor or standing up. They often need brain breaks to get their bodies moving. My students are kinesthetic and visual learners who thrive with movement and technology.
I teach at an amazing Title I school where students come from families of lower-income and limited resources.
The community is a very small one but close-knit where everyone supports school activities.
Most of my students are English language learners who are eager to learn and come to school. My class consists of thirty-one intelligent students who are driven by hands-on learning and collaborative discussions. They look forward to brain breaks, meditation, and anything involving art, music, and technology!
My Project
A listening center in our classroom will help support my students with independent reading. During our guided reading rotations, my students will be able to independently listen to their tape or CD while reading along in their book. Listening to the audio will help my students track their words, learn about the story elements, and become fluent readers.
A listening center will allow my students to become more independent readers and improve their fluency and comprehension.
The audio will play repeatedly for more practice, giving students the opportunity to listen to modeled, paced reading. We've never had a listening center in our class and know that this will motivate students to want to read more.
