Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My room is centered around a culturally responsive pedagogy built by the students, where they are encouraged and welcomed to discover, explore, and engage with one another as a community, providing them with the opportunity to express their ideas and opinions.
A large percentage of my students are English language learners, in which English is their second language.
Several of them are bilingual and speak both Spanish and English. The elementary school is located in a low income community and is in desperate need of reconstruction, since it was built during the 1950s. Due to budget cuts and minimal financial support, our students lack the sufficient resources they need to excel academically.
My Project
My students need a listening center to utilize in the classroom. The product will be mainly utilized with groups of 6. The students who will particularly benefit from the listening system are my ELL students and those with low reading comprehension skills. The students will be able to read the readings with the class, then reread the same readings a second time using the listening center in order to further support their comprehension.
Since more than half of my students are English language learners, I desire to set up a listening center particularly for those who require language support.
Listening to the readings on tape will assist them with both their reading comprehension and language acquisition.
