Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten classroom is home to 22 bright, energetic learners. In this room students are encouraged to foster their autonomy and independence. They work hard to learn. A listening center would expose them to many more words and create autonomy and choice.
My kindergarten classroom is filled with students that come from high poverty and low literacy homes.
This listening center would enrich the children's multi-sensory experience. They need to hear and see many more words than I can provide. Using the requested iPod shuffles, books and CDs, high frequency sight words will be seen and heard. This listening center will increase my students' ability to speak and read more fluently.
My Project
Everyday in our room we have learning centers. Learning centers are small group activities. Many of the centers are independent learning stations that reinforce concepts already taught. My students would use the listening center everyday during their centers time.
Research says that the more a child reads or is read to he or she will have an increased vocabulary and higher scores academically.
With the new common core standards in full swing in my room, the listening center will help implement many parts of the new standards.
