Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a very challenging neighborhood where only 1 in 10 actually make it all the way through to high school graduation. Many of my students are two to three grade levels behind due to the fact that their own parents struggle to help them and put food on the table.
The school that I teach at is 98% poverty and 99% free and reduced lunch.
Several of my students are pulled out of class each day for lab class, but when they are in the regular classroom it is imperative for me to have activities that can foster their growth in learning as well as continue to foster the growth of the rest of my students. As a teacher I do my best to get the materials that can help my students, however it is hard to get the more expensive and important things when I barely can afford the everyday items for my students. My students love to listen as I read to them out loud in class, but it is hard when they want to hear or read more and we just do not have the equipment necessary for that to happen in the classroom. That is why it is vitally important for me to try and do everything I can to provide my students with everything possible so that they will continue to grow as learners and discover the joy of reading and learning.
My Project
As a teacher working in a poverty school it is essential for my students to be able to have materials that help them to gain an advantage in their overall knowledge and learning through a variety of different means. It is a challenge as a teacher to provide these things when I try to buy what I can with my own money, but the bigger items are harder to provide when their are limited mans of funding. It is my goal to be able to give my students as many advantages as possible and by bringing in a listening center my students will have the chance to improve their comprehension skills by being able to not only read and hear the story, but they can do it multiple times which will allow it to stick in their brain longer. It will also allow my students to have a better chance at gaining the skills necessary to have success on the state tests.
As a teacher it is imperative for me to provide many different learning opportunities for my students.
In order to have the materials necessary for the students to use it take donors and friends working together to complete this. My students don't always get the best, but I do my best to give them everything possible to learn and continue their educational journey.
