My students are excited about reading! Let me tell you a little about my group. Our elementary school is set in rural south Mississippi. My classroom consists of twenty-two second graders that are very eager to learn. The students in our class are a family who want to help each other succeed. We frequently work in cooperative groups as we explore new topics. They enjoy working together as a team to complete different activities. This helps to promote a positive learning environment.
I would like to have a listening center for my students. This would include a CD player, set of wireless headphones, and nonfiction books for the students to read. One of my students' weaknesses is comprehension of informational texts. This listening center will help me to expose my students to interesting nonfiction topics while strengthening their comprehension skills. This will allow me to build my students' vocabulary while using new exciting texts that will interest them. Since these books have topics that will hold my students' attention and interest, they will not even realize how much they are learning! This center will also help my students to be fluent readers.
