I teach first grade in a public charter school in Baltimore City. Our class has 24 students with one teacher and one assistant teacher. We aren't always able to read with children individually, so funding this project is one more way to allow the children to enjoy literacy activities.
Our school is a unique and amazing school that believes in the creativity and strength of the children, teaching them to love learning and giving them the skills they need to be successful in life.
Our students are chosen through a lottery system, so we have a diverse student population, both economically and racially.
My Project
Last year, I upgraded our listening center to CDs. We still had cassettes and in one school year, I went through 3 tape players. They just weren't keeping up with my first graders! The kids have been loving the new books on CD, but this week, someone hit the CD player and it no longer works.
The first graders use the listening center to enjoy stories and build upon their love of books.
It also helps them learn to follow the text along with the recording to develop their own reading skills. With an iPod Touch, wrapped safely in an Otterbox case, my students will be able to enjoy hearing the stories without me worrying that they will scratch the CDs and result in the need to close the listening center. We will still learn about taking care of our classroom materials, but if someone accidentally drops the iPod, it won't be damaged because of the case.
