I am a primary Montessori teacher in a Title I school and have 23 very curious 3 to 6 year old children in my class. Since this is a Montessori classroom, I have the advantage of keeping the same children in my class for a three year cycle. Students start with me as three year olds and leave when they enter first grade. We come from a small town with a low socioeconomic background.
Many of my students come to school to have their first experience with books.
We read many books from various genres, have author studies, and delve into research using non-fiction books. By the time my students leave my classroom to enter first grade, most of them have a favorite book, genre, and/or author. We love to read!
My Project
My students love to read! They enjoy looking at books in our classroom library, being read stories by a more advanced peer, and listening to books read aloud by a teacher. My students even enjoy re-enacting some of their favorite stories in front of the class! I believe the only piece of literacy missing in our classroom is a quality listening center.
Our students would love to have the opportunity to choose their own book during work time, and have it read to them as they follow along.
This will help my youngest students as they learn to turn pages appropriately and track print. It will also help my oldest students with reading fluency and becoming more familiar with printed words.
I have selected several different types of books to include in our listening area based on a few of our favorites. This will give the students a variety of wonderful books from which to choose.
