Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you step into my first grade classroom, you feel a sense of welcome and family. I want to make my classroom fun and challenging; a place where students can grow and experience an interactive education. It is my job as their teacher to help foster their love for learning. I work in a Title I elementary school where the majority of the students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. My students come from various backgrounds but are very enthusiastic about learning.
My students are very eager learners who are always striving to do their best.
My Project
My students favorite time of day is "read aloud." In First Grade, we have various independent learning centers while I teach small groups of students. My students are learning the foundational skills of reading and are only able to read decodable on their own. This project will give my students the opportunity to listen to rich text and build upon their reading comprehension skills.
A listening center has so many academic benefits for students.
It models fluent reading, helps students decode unfamiliar words, introduces new vocabulary, and introduces new genres that may not be covered in our curriculum. My students will work on listening to a story and then work together to retell the story and many other activities.
Listening centers are an essential tool for teaching just about any topic because you will have the undivided attention of students. If the subject matter/book is fun, funny, or entertaining, that is even better. We are in need of a listening center in my classroom. It will help many of my students focus their attention better and enjoy the lesson which will enhance their learning experience.
