Becoming a teacher is one of the best decisions I ever made. Being a part of a child learning to read is priceless. I teach second grade in a high-needs, low socio-economic school. My class ranges from beginning to independent readers. Becoming a fluent reader means becoming a lifelong reader.
Every child wants to read.
Successful reading is not just reading words. Successful reading includes fluently reading words and being able to understand what those words mean. Some of my students are just beginning to read, but are struggling with comprehension. Being a fluent reader helps with being able to understand what you are reading. Children need to be able to read smoothly not choppy and they are taught this the best through modeling. I model fluent reading each and every day, yet my students need to be exposed to more!! This listening center will help to provide just that. My students will be able to listen to stories independently, while following along at a fluent pace. After listening to a story they will be answering questions to increase comprehension. Students will be practice reading along with the book while following the words with their eyes to increase accuracy and speed. The more text I am able to expose them to, the more fluent readers they will become!
I am requesting four individual CD players with headphones for my classroom. Having individual CD players will help increase student focus and help motivate students to choose the fluency center. My students will also need individual books with Cd's to be successful. I have requested some sets of books including The Gingerbread Man, Chrysanthemum, Three Billy Goats Gruff and some popular Dr. Seuss titles that I know my second graders will enjoy. I do not currently have any of these materials in my classroom. Last year when I had this class as first graders, my school didn't have enough for each classroom to have one so unfortunately we went without. Fortunately, I am looping with this class and through this project we can make sure this never happens again, and YOU can help!!!! Through the kindness of others my students will be able to choose their own quiet space in the classroom to listen to and enjoying reading over and over again!
Most of the students in my classroom read and comprehend below grade level.
They need help to learn to read words accurately and fluently. Your help will change the lives of my 2nd grade students. The additional reading exposure will help build a solid literacy foundation for these students and students who are yet to come. Please consider being a part of this and help to give my students a new listening center to help them begin to learn how to read and comprehend what they read.
