My students need 6 portable cd and cd players to improve the classroom listening center to incorporate the Daily 5. This will also help build language and improve fluency!
As part of the Daily 5, my 2nd graders listen to reading (books on cd and open court stories). Many students are faced with the challenge of faulty listening equipment within my classroom and therefore lose time on literacy activities due to equipment failure.
Each day during my literacy block, I work with student who come from Spanish speaking homes, with little or no English proficiency.
One of the several goals that I have for my students is to improve their English fluency. It is vital to develop students fluency skills to help close the gap in the English Language proficiency. Having a listening center that works in my classroom will be one avenue that affords children to hear good models of English Language
My Project
As I reflect on my teaching this year, I am always self assessing myself on ways to improve my literacy program and incorporating the daily 5 into my activities. I am finding that I am lacking in the component of literature using technology (cd players) as part of my Daily 5 routine. I am needing to increase my reading library by using other materials to facilitate learning. I am also looking for ways to independently engage my students, by listening to literature on their own.
The benefits from a literacy listening center is that it can reinforce one to one correspondence or build sight word vocabulary, but for many it will provide exposure to various literary genre.
For ALL students regardless of reading ability , books or activities on cd will bring things to life for all of the students!! This is why it is critical to improve my classroom by having the materials needed to support fro all students.
