My Students

I have a group of 18 second graders who live in New Mexico. Our classroom is bright with many smiling faces. Every student in our classroom receives free or reduced breakfast. No matter students' life situations, students find a safe, nurturing, and loving environment in our classroom. It is also a place where I try to provide my students with many opportunities to learn creatively, courageously, and collaboratively.

When my kids are in the room, they have a place to be inspired, be encouraged, be loved, and be changed!

In our classroom, we want every student to enjoy reading no matter what level they are reading at. Sometimes reading can be difficult for students and can shoot down their confidence. My goal is to create a place where they can enjoy reading without the struggle.

My Project

Developing a love for reading is essentially tied to a child feeling confident and encouraged in their reading time. For my SPED students, reading is one of the most challenging parts of their day. They are discouraged, struggling, and lost. Sounding out words and stopping every second becomes frustrating and discouraging.

These books will be used in our listening center where struggling readers can go and have books read to them.

This gives my SPED students times to enjoy and comprehend the story without the struggle of decoding words and fumbling through vocabulary. Listening centers are a time where they can participate in reading, build up their vocabulary, strengthen their confidence, and support them at their own level.

We use the app EPIC for our listening center. On this app, these stories are already recorded by a reader. The students can select the book on the app, grab the book from our listening bins, and can start reading along with the app. These books would help me create this listening center for my SPED students and continue to develop them as confident, growing readers.
