It is often very difficult to get low functioning students excited about reading books.
My second graders are from a low-income neighborhood and are primarily English Language Learners. Most of my students receive free breakfast and lunch each day and many of them are currently living in either shelters or low-income housing developments. Very few of my students have many, if any, books at home and few were read to or exposed to literature before kindergarten.
It is often very difficult to motivate these struggling students and English Language Learners, especially when it comes to reading. They often want to be reading the exciting chapter books the rest of the "on grade level" students are reading. Unfortunately, since they can't handle the material, those students just continue to get more frustrated and discouraged.
From my experience, these students get excited about reading books in the listening center. They are able to follow along with the words and get the opportunity to really understand the story without having to struggle through stretching out words. Students are also able to read books that may be slightly above their reading level because they do not have to do the reading all by themselves but can instead follow along with the person reading. By following along with the stories though, they are developing better decoding and word recognition skills.
Unfortunately, the listening materials I have inherited at school are a mess and I have very few complete sets of books and tapes. I would love to use the listening center more but the students get bored with reading the same few books over and over again. With your help, I can expand my small listening center library and get my students excited about reading.
