Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My PreK students come in every morning excited about school. I teach a bilingual class (English/Spanish) and all of my students are English Language Learners. Most of the students at my school come from low-income families and many times have difficult situations at home. When they come to school, however, they feel they are in a safe, loving, nurturing environment.
Their favorite part of the day is story time.
They have developed a love for books and really enjoy listening to stories. Throughout the day, they do not miss a chance to pick up a book and ask for it to be read to them.
My Project
With this project, I hope to create a listening center my PreK students will love. With the Kindle Fires, students will easily be able to choose from a wide variety of stories to be read aloud to them. In PreK, students enjoy being read to and I hope that by making read alouds accessible to them, their love for reading will only keep growing.
Choice and agency are key for little learners to develop as readers.
We currently do not have access to a listening center that PreK students can independently use or one where they have many options to choose from. This project will make it possible for my bilingual students to have access to read alouds of books of their choice in both English and Spanish.
