Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Be pivotal in the literacy of students with special needs! Help our classroom by providing a listening center with sets of leveled books on tape!
I teach sixth grade at Sawyer Elementary on the Southwest side of Chicago. Sawyer serves Gage Park, a low-income, primarily Mexican-American neighborhood. I have 36 students in my classroom, 18 of whom are learning English, 5 of whom speak no English, and 2 of whom are blind. As you know, listening is an extraordinary way to build literacy skills for ELL students, particularly if they can follow along in a copy of the book! These students need beginning English experiences, and they need to hear, as much as possible, how English sounds and how it is structured. All 18 of my ELL students could benefit from having this technology in our classroom.
Furthermore, this technology is essential to the learning of my blind students. Keeping up with content area learning is difficult for these students because reading the textbook in Braille takes much longer than reading it in Standard English. Also, we only have one textbook in Braille out of four. Being able to listen to lessons in the textbook would be ideal for them, since they could keep us and more easily participate in class. All the students will benefit from this powerful resource, and all students will have a chance to improve their fluency, reading, speaking, and enjoyment of reading.
