My students need a listening center in my first grade classroom. This will help my students to hear reading fluency and expression when listening to a story.
My first grade classroom engages in a lot of center based activities. This allows me to work with a small group of students to help them at their individual learning levels. Centers can sometimes be distracting to others so a listening center will help prevent distractions.
I teach in a school that has a big range of socioeconomic levels.
Some students come from wealthy homes and other students come from poverty situations. All of my students are very nice. My school has a young staff that is eager to reach out to help students with school work, life skills, and to teach valuable life lessons. Unfortunately, my school is not in the position to offer a budget to teachers for items that we need in our classroom. In fact, this year I have had to buy essential items such as glue sticks, pencils, crayons, and scissors. I have reached out for help from parents of my students for essential supplies. A listening center would be wonderful for my students. It would help to prevent distractions when listening to a story (currently a center gathers around a CD player), and it will help my students because they could hear a good model of expressive reading, which is a skill that is hard to teach to young readers.
My students would use a listening center every day in my classroom. My students engage in center based learning for 50 minutes a day. This allows me to work with students in small groups on skills that they are struggling with while my other students are working on different skills in their centers. Some students listen to a story, some work on the computer, some work on journal writing, and the rest work with me at a table to work on different skills. The reading center can sometimes be a distraction because we can all hear the story on the CD player. It makes it hard for my first graders to concentrate on writing in their journal, and it makes it hard for my other first graders to concentrate on the skills that I am working with them on in our center. A listening center with headphones would be wonderful. My students would be able to listen to the story and my other students could concentrate on their work without any distractions.
The headphones and listening center would be so great for my first graders.
It will help to eliminate distractions and help them to concentrate on the story that they are listening too. The rest of the class wouldn't have to listen to that story over and over again as each center of students rotated through. The rest of the class wouldn't be distracted by the noise of the CD player and could concentrate on their center work.
