Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a Title I school. Our students come from a variety of economic background with over 80% receiving free lunch. Our school is one of the few Spanish immersion schools in the district. This school year I will be teaching 50% in Spanish and 50% in English. My students are kids who English is their second language and they want to continue to develop their native language while learning to speak English, or kids who native language is English and want to learn Spanish.
My Project
I am trying to create a listening center with a CD player and books on cd for my 4th grade immersion class. Many of my students do not get to listen to reading as many parents have two jobs or they do not speak Spanish. I want my students to be able to listen to reading while we do Daily 5. Some students will be writing, others will be reading to self, others will be reading with a partner, others will use the computers to work on words and I'm hoping to get my reading center running so others can listen to reading. This center will allow me to focus on small groups as all my students will be working independently while I pull small groups. Listening to reading will make a huge difference in my students learning as many live in non-spanish speaking homes and need to listen to reading to become fluent readers.
