Our school serves 150 native students from kindergarten through 8th grade with a high poverty rate. 94.8% of our students qualify for the school free and reduced lunch program. These students come from communities with historically few resources.
Despite the challenges our students are thrusted into at such a young age, they are so eager to learn.
Our students work hard to grasp the foundational skills necessary to succeed in school. They show up day in and day out ready to learn and struggle through hard concepts.
For this project I am looking to add a listening center to our classroom. This center gives them the opportunity to read books out of their independent reading range. Reading along with books on CD allows them to hear different expressions, fluency, and words they would not hear reading on their own.
A listening center provides a way for students to read along to their favorite stories in an entertaining and exciting way.
This helps them build a love for reading at an early age. By sparking this love for reading early, we can help to make lifelong readers and learners!
