Although my students may only be 5 years old, many of them have not had a lot of interactions with books in their hands, much less having another person read to them. I feel as though I can be extremely dramatic when reading; sometimes they should have the opportunity to hear others reading a story.
My students are a FABULOUS group of kindergartners in a school with about 950 in attendance.
They come from different life experiences but what means the most is they are ready and willing to learn. We live in a rural town right on the outskirts of the suburbs. Our school is considered a Title I school that strives to exceed state and national standards.
My Project
The class I am teaching this year was added this year. So, I am a little slim on resources for my classroom. I would love to have a listening center for students to be able to listen to different types of books. Many students may not be able to read specific books independently, and will have them read to them so they can track along in the book and begin to recognize unfamiliar words. This center will be used during guided reading groups as an independent center.
I want children to be able to experience literature in many different ways.
This just happens to be one of them. I would love for 100% of my students to walk away from their kindergarten year with a love for reading - this is just one way to do this. I want them to hear how others love literature through their expressions of reading. As they begin to read out loud to others as well as to themselves I want them to feel free to show expression and be creative with it.
