Have you ever read a story to a small child? Have you seen their face light up as you act out voices for each character? Have you captured their attention with the love of a good book? This is what happens each and every time my kindergarteners listen to a read-a-loud story.
My kindergartners attend a fantastic school in which learning with technology is key.
I teach in a very diverse kindergarten classroom, with students of all ethnicity, ability levels, and needs. My students come in each year with a variety of learning styles and needs that I work hard to meet through the use of differentiated learning activities. Some students come in with little to no alphabet and phonics skills, while others are fully reading. It is with the help of technology that I can work to bridge the gap of these diverse learners and help them all grow to their fullest potential. I work hard everyday to provide a 21st century classroom environment so that my students can learn with the tools of their future.
As with any kindergartner, my students have a very short attention span. However, when you open up a book, its like magic! They instantly stop, pay attention, and soak up every word. With a new iPod nano and headphones in our classroom, our listening center will be brought into the 21st century. We currently have an outdated CD player with no headphones. The students are not used to handling CD's, which often results in scratched or broken ones. Without headphones, the listening center becomes very disruptive to students working around it. The iPod will help to eliminate the problem of broken or scratched CDs, and will keep all of our listening center books organized. It will also cut down on excess noise by giving each student their own headphones to listen and enjoy the books. Students in the listening center will benefit from hearing a good reader read out loud. This will help to build fluency and expression in their own reading, and create a love for books.
Your donation will help to infuse a love of reading for my kindergarteners through read-a-loud books.
A listening center with the iPod will help to build reading and comprehension skills. It will help to build an excitement for reading and give them the beginning reading skills that they need, while promoting a technology integrated learning environment!Read More
