We believe that everyone is a genius and that all of our students are leaders. Our school serves 450 students: 15% Latino, 30% African American, 55% Caucasian; and approximately 50 percent of our school population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.
I have the opportunity to teach an amazing group of students that work tirelessly to become proficient readers and writers.
And although this unique group of students consists of our school's most struggling readers, we celebrate the gifts they bring. We use these strengths to grow strong readers and writers.
I work with some of our school's most struggling readers. In addition to struggling with the basic skills of decoding, fluency, and comprehension, my upper elementary students generally lack the confidence and motivation needed to sustain independent reading. Plus, many of the books they can read independently are not age appropriate.
A classroom set of stereo headphones will allow my students to choose how they read.
These headphones will provide more opportunities for my students to listen to audio books, which serves as a model for fluent reading. It also gives my students the opportunity to actively engage with high-interest text.
