Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a music teacher, I use recorded music for dancing, movement, listening, and accompaniment. But the old boombox I have does not play loud enough for all of the students to hear the music!
In a world of high-stakes testing, students at my school find play and fun in music class!
It's a place where they can be creative and learn music through games, play and performance. My students are curious, engaged, motivated learners. Most are from low-income families and cannot afford instruments at home or music lessons. They love coming to music class to sing, dance, and play instruments.
My Project
A new audio system will significantly improve my students' learning! We would love to have their favorite songs playing as they warm up with movement activities and learn new dances. With a quality speaker, my students will be able to hear the nuances of instrumentation, tempo, and dynamics during listening exercises.
As students learn instruments like guitar, recorded music is a great way for them to play along to music they are familiar with from their homes and on the radio. I can also expose them to music from different time periods and different cultures. This audio system will allow me to play music wirelessly so that I can move around the classroom to support students as they play and move.
Imagine the difference between learning a dance with and without music.
The ability to hear music as they move, sing, and play will create more connections and increase their intrinsic motivation. Listening is one of the main strands of Music Education and my students need to be able to hear the music!
