This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Whenever I have a read aloud you can just see the excitement in their faces. Some do not have books at home or anyone there to read to them aloud. These books will allow the student access to listen to a story independently. The books will also help them to improve their fluency in reading.
My students are 5 and 6 year old Kindergrtners who enjoy reading or being read to.
My students come from various economic backgrounds, some of whom are not exposed to books at their level in the home. Some of these children do not have anyone at home who will read to them. Since the students have not mastered reading fluently, I have set up a listening center so that they can hear the spoken word as the book is being read.
My Project
The use of audio books in the Listening Center helps the student to work independently and listen to a story that he/she desires. Most all of the stories will go along with a unit of study or a season in the year. The students will be able to relate to the characters, setting and identify problems in the story. They will be exposed to spoken literature on their own which would help to improve their language skills, and retelling abilities.
I am a first year Kindergarten teacher and I have inherited several audio books on tape and records from the previous teacher.
Most of the books that I would like to use now come only on CD. I would like to build my Listening Center with several books on CD. These books will help the students to improve their language, retelling abilities and to be exposed to different types of literature independently. These books will help increase task performance and build their excitement for reading.
