Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help us use & learn from our listening library! Because of a project fulfilled by Donors Choose, my classroom has an amazing books-on-tape/CD library, however we don't have enough functioning radios or headsets to go around. Teachers usually share the working components but they are hard to come by!
My students are an eager group of scholars!
For many, it's their first time in school since a majority of them never attended preschool. They attend a Title 1 school full of dedicated teachers who just raised their performance scores by 39 points! Our school is over populated but you'd never know it by looking around. The students try hard and care about their school. Most, if not all of my students are English language learners. Many are also first generation learners here in the U.S. This makes it especially challenging for them to solidify their reading, listening & speaking because they have very little support at home. This isn't to say that the parents don't help, rather that they don't always speak English & aren't always equipped to help them, though they truly may want to. I can also say, with great pride, that our students are appreciative and truly grateful for all that we've received from Donors Choose.
My Project
We are requesting 1 CD-tape combination player, a junction box for multiple listeners & 4 headsets. We need these materials desperately! The ones we have at school are deteriorating if not already broken. We have a complete set of testing materials & wonderful literature sets to listen to, only nowhere to listen to them! These tools will be used throughout the day & every child will get a turn at least once daily. If I had these working tools I'd fold them into our daily rotations. This means that each child can listen to either a book of their choice, or one prescribed to them by me, depending on their areas of need. Not only does it provide them with a little quiet time each day to sit & enjoy being read to, but for many it can, in some small way, fill the void of not having English speaking parents at home. This listening center will help to enforce necessary reading goals & standards.
Donations to "Listen Up" will make an extraordinary difference in the lives of my current students and many more to come.
Reading is not something we can dismiss. It is the single one thing that can lead a child to succeed or leave him/her feeling defeated. This listening center will provide practice to students, a strong reading role model (other than myself), a chance to be independent while reading & listening, & as a byproduct, create excitement & joy when it is ones own turn to listen!
