My students need a listening center to help them with all subjects. They need a place to listen to books, respond to read text and to projects.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine reading a reading assignment when you can't read. Imagine that same story coming to live as it is read to you through headphones. Imagine the interest level sky-rocketing as students find a new love for reading.
My students are special education students in a self-contained classroom, meaning they receive all subjects in the same class.
My students are 6, 7, and 8 grade students. They have varying abilities and needs. However, they spend about 6 hours together in the same room, where they receive all of their academics and behavioral support. All students have a behavior or emotional disorder. Most also have difficulty in reading-some can barely read at all. Many have been passed over through the years, being pushed to the back because of the behavior problems. They need help in learning to love school, especially material that must be read. They need to know that they have a chance, a chance to be successful in class and in life. Help me help them realize how wonderful they are, as they overcome their current struggles.
My Project
By providing a listening center you can drastically influence some of the hardest to reach students. These students typically come to school to eat lunch, socialize and avoid their families. They are the typical statistics of drop outs. However, they can be so much more. Every day they learn and learn about themselves. They are desperately trying to overcome their past. However, current issues in reading often embarrasses them and holds them back. By providing a listening center, books can come alive in a whole new way. Help draw them into reading, draw them into school and back into life. This could be the first step into helping them learn to love reading. The headphones help to contain the noise for the people at the listening center allowing me to work with various levels of students at the same time and maximizing on their education, while still making it personal.
Please give to this project.
My students are so surprised when someone gives them something. They are truly touched. Donors giving to them more than their parents ever dreamed of...it's a whole new world for them. Please help me touch their lives by showing them how important education is for them. It is vital that they learn to read. Because it is such a struggle for most, they often shy away from it. This can be such an interesting way to reach them.
