My students are as diverse as they can get. They are a mix of many races and religions. Although 100% of my students receive free lunch, they come from a variety of income brackets and financial situations. Even when they walk in our classroom, they are a mix of ability levels, social/emotional maturity, and feelings about school and learning. Above all, they are children who deserve to receive the best education possible. My school is in a very nice neighborhood, so it is often misunderstood in regards to our students' needs. The neighborhood has grown past young children. Our students come mostly from run-down apartments. Our neighborhood is still very supportive and involved with our school.
My Project
I want all of my students to enjoy reading and listening to books. I read to my students everyday, and we all agree that this is our favorite time of day. Many of my students do not have books in their home or family members available to read to them at night. Some of the books in my classroom library are too hard for my students to read on their own, and there is not enough of me to go around!
The individual CD players and the audio books will allow students to listen to stories that will strengthen their comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary.
Reading is such a critical piece of a child's success in school. My goal is to set all my students up for success. I believe the more I can expose them to literature, the more likely they are to be successful adults and life-long readers.
