My 1st grade ENL classroom is a place where students are allowed to take chances and explore who they are while learning the English language. They get excited to learn English and take pride in their efforts to challenge their minds for the sake of learning.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My Project
A listening center enhances the students ability to focus on the words as they hear them. It gives them a sense of independence within the reading centers. They feel an accomplishment as they listen to the stories. They do not have the added pressure of attempting to read the word on their own which allows them to enjoy a story read to them. They interact with the story in a manner that is casual and in a safety zone. Afterwards, they discuss the story they heard with their classmates which helps them to further practice the English language. A listening center allows the students to enter a new world within the classroom.
