My students need a listening center for independent reading practice in my classroom.
I am a Kindergarten teacher in a public school system. Our school population is eighty percent Hispanic. Our parents are working class people who care about their children and see education as a way for their children to have a better future. They are very supportive of their children and of our neighborhood school.
My goal is to teach my students to be enthusiastic and independent learners.
Many of my students come to me with no formal educational experience. Since Kindergarten is the foundation for all the years to come, it is so important for me to make sure that I not only teach my students needed subject matter, but also teach them to love learning. This is a mission I take very seriously.
Listening is an important skill for Kindergarten students to learn. Independence is an important tool to obtain this skill.
With a listening center in our classroom, the children will be able to listen to quality literature independently.
As part of our Guided Reading program, I will be able to use the listening center as one of my reading rotations for small group instruction.
By listening to these stories, the students will gain reading behaviors by following along with the text and hearing the text read aloud to help with unknown words. This will help them become better readers by giving them technology and high interest stories.
