I am blessed to work with a wonderful group of diverse young children who come to me with various backgrounds and experiences. As a teacher in a self-contained, Special Education classroom, all of my students have identified special needs such as Autism, health impairments, and developmental delays. I teach in a public school where a large percentage of our students receive free or reduced lunch and are faced with other concerns that put them at risk for learning challenges. Despite these potential challenges, we work hard to reach our full potential.
In my classroom we are proud to love, laugh, and learn everyday!
As a preschool teacher, I work with our school's youngest learners (ages 3-5). It is important to me that I provide children and families a positive experience as they start school. Together we set goals and strive to meet them through our exciting learning adventures!
My Project
Did you know that children need to be read at least 4-5 books everyday? With families busier than ever and a lack of available books at home, it is important that I give my children as much experience with books while I have them at school. I love to hold a child in my lap and share a book together, but the demands of a busy school day make it difficult to do this for each of my students every day. This is why I want to add a Listening Center to my classroom.
A Listening Center will provide a calm area where children can sit together to enjoy a book independently.
Using technology such as an iPad that will scan QR Codes that link to an online reading of a book makes listening to a story exciting and fun for children. Also, adding an iPad gives an updated twist to common classroom Listening Centers by providing visuals for the children. Instead of simply listening to the book, they can now look at the pictures or even watch a video of a person reading the book! Adding visual support to the listening center allows me to reach more children with different learning needs.
How much a child is read to in the first five years of his life directly impacts his success for independent reading and comprehension later in school. This project will not only provide my students increased exposure to books but will also foster a life-long love of reading. Please consider donating to my group of special little learners!
