Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have taught in Title one, poverty schools my entire teaching career thus far, which is already 12 years! Never in my career have I ever taught such sweet, hardworking, loving students as the 3rd graders I have at my current school.
My students are mostly Hispanic and come to me with zero to very limited English.
For some, this is their first experience in school or in an American school system. Many of them have been through trauma to get to America. Their stories are absolutely heartbreaking, and can sometimes be difficult to grasp for a middle class, white female. However, despite the hardships, they are resilient. They leave their "baggage" at home and come to school ready to learn every single day. They behave. They show the utmost respect to all of their teachers and to each other. They help each other out, especially the students who don't understand due to the language barrier. They are motivated to learn. They know their job is to learn English so they can go home and support their families so they can have a better life in America. Their excitement and determination to learn the language is refreshing and exhilarating.
My Project
All of these resources are an English Language Learner Teacher's dream. The pictures are colorful, which helps students see more clearly compared to black and white photo copies. (When learning about colors, it is very essential to use colors and color printers are expensive!)
The kits are tailored to help my students with their speaking, writing, reading, and listening, which are the four components they need to practice to master the English language.
These kits are great because they can be used in small group with direct instruction with me, or self-guided in independent work, or small groups without the teachers with their clear directions.
I can use the speaking and listening kits with my students who need practice with oral language. I can use the basic picture flashcards and level 1 activity cards for my newcomers who do not speak any English. Pictures and graphics are critical to helping them understand. In addition, the sequencing cards are wonderful to practice oral language by telling a story about what's happening, written language by writing it, and students' must be able to sequence to test out of the English Language Learner program. I can't wait to teach the critical reading skills such as main idea, summarizing. and inferring with the high interest cards with my higher language students.
Every item asked for is a direct correlation to the 3rd grade curriculum, and will create a much deeper understanding with the colors and interactive capability. This sure beats teacher drawings on index cards, or spending hours finding clip art to support lessons in the classroom. This will be a HUGE time saver to me, but also highly engaging!!
