I teach in a small community in central Florida, about an hour outside of Orlando. Until two years ago, my school was considered Title One, and we received some additional funds from the federal government to pay for much needed materials for teaching students who come from disadvantaged homes. Two years ago, we lost our Title One status because we went down a percentage point in our "free and reduced lunch" population and the threshold for schools to qualify went up slightly. With the change in status came a significant loss of funds as well as a loss of technology items that had been purchased with Title One dollars.
What remains consistent is the love I have for teaching and the joy my students show for learning.
I start each year focusing on the "super powers" each student brings to the classroom, and how they can each use that power to grow as thinkers, creators, readers, writers, and doers over the course of the school year. We have a "Growth Mindset" in the classroom, and I am excited to see just how much each one of my kiddos continues to grow this year.
My Project
There are some great resources available for kids online. In my classroom, I use a computer based resource during station time. While sometimes it is the computers or wifi that frustrate me, many times it is simply faulty headphones that keep my students from fully engaging in their lessons. The headsets I have are either broken or kids find them so uncomfortable they refuse to wear them while doing lessons.
I did a lot of research to find affordable headphones that will stand up to the wear and tear of daily use in the classroom but are still comfortable for little ears.
I hope to increase the effectiveness of my computer station by providing my students with working headphones they will want to use.
