Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My resource students are GREAT kids that are eager to learn and improve. Many of them come from homes where they do not experience educational support for a variety of reasons (some parents are in survival mode, providing for the family during tough economic times; some parents do not read/speak English, so they are unable to support their child by listening to them read--to mention a couple of scenarios). Even though many of them come from "high needs" families due to monetary needs, language differences, or both, the students are motivated to learn--what more can a teacher ask?
Well, this teacher is asking for something my students really need--a quality listening center. The boom box that I heard had been in my room last year (I'm new to the school) is no where to be found. I had tried to borrow materials for them to use; however, those were not in good working order. I went to the Youth Ranch (a used items store) and purchased a used boom box--it's not in great shape, but it helps to some extent.
However, what they REALLY need is a quality player that is versatile (plays tapes, CDs and MP3 recordings). They need headphones that work and fit well, and a jack box that will allow several students to use the listening center at one time.
Research has shown that one of the most effective tools to increase reading skills is fluency. Research has also shown that allowing students to hear the words as they follow along and read with a recording is an extremely effective method of increasing fluency. A quality listening center will make a world of difference for my students as they work to develop the fluency they need to be competent readers. You will make it possible for my students to become proficient, fluent readers.
