My class is in need of a listening center to help them with their reading skills. Listening centers provide students with appropriately modeled reading intonation and fluency which in turn helps them with their reading comprehension. Having regular access to a listening center will help my students become better readers which will assist them in all areas of school. I teach a very diverse third grade class in the Chicago Public schools. My students are African American, Hispanic, and Vietnamese. They vary greatly in their academic abilities. These students are similar, however, in that they come from poor households. 97% of my school's children receive free or reduced lunches. Due to the poverty that these children live in, it is often times difficult for their families to purchase the necessary items, such as books, to help their children learn from home. If we were to receive this listening center these wonderful students would be able to make up for the difficulties they face at home by listening to books read to them regularly at school. I am in need of a tape recorder and 4 themes of books to create our listening center. The themes would include one science theme, one social studies theme, and two fiction themes. In all, this donation would include 100 books from 20 different titles, all found at Lakeshore Learning. What a great addition to our room this would be! Thank you for your consideration. So often the students in my class go without. With your help, they can have a truly wonderful addition to our class that will help their reading skills and make learning fun.
