My students need more choice in the classroom. The listening centers is an independent choice for extended literacy practice and learning. Art is also a productive choice for students during choice time.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an inner-city school in one of the most expensive cities in the country. Over 75% of our families qualify for free and reduced-price lunch, and over 60% of our families are Spanish-speaking. Housing costs are outrageous and many of our families are living in substandard conditions. The apartments or studios are small, offering very little room for children to play or a quiet place for reading, homework, or other more contemplative activities. There is also a big challenge for students to engage in enrichment or physical activities. Because of these challenges, our school plays an expanded role in supporting our students' ability to engage in rich and motivating, educational experiences.
Our families value education, but often have little time to spend reading and doing other enriching activities with their children.
Because parents often work two or more jobs, students do not have the opportunity to participate in arts and outdoor activities after school or on weekends. For all these reasons and more, we try to create the richest, most supportive environment possible during the school day.
My Project
My students need to be able to make choices about their learning during the school day. If we want them to be lifelong learners, they need to develop their individual interests and have opportunities to make choices about their learning. It has been my experience as a veteran teacher that when students self-select their learning projects, place or materials, the most amazing learning happens!
The Comfy Couch listening center creates a space for independent extensions to their literacy learning.
Students love to listen to classroom songs or listen to favorite books as they read along. The comfy chairs will make this more inviting for students who would not normally gravitate to this type of activity. The colored tape and pipe cleaners support our imagination curriculum. We have a bin in the classroom with cardboard pieces, rolls and other recyclable materials that students use to create robots, boats, birdhouses or anything else their imaginations draw them to.
Our day is often so packed with lessons and activities that students get a bit anxious about how much time they have for an activity. The timer is a good way for them to manage their time and not but upset when it is abruptly up and they have to switch to another activity.
These products will help support my students to be the natural and powerful learners they are. I can't wait to see them interact, create and learn with these new tools!
